Hello World!

By on December 2, 2014

I’m an IT professional, and I must admit, I hate that phrase — “Hello World!” I’ve always disliked Hello World. Any book I have read that has examples and they want you to write HELLO WORLD, I write anything but….

Seriously, could someone not have come up with something better? (No offense to the guy who actually did it many years ago.)

It’s not even accurate. The world isn’t going to see the program you just created. And if you created a blog and your first article is “Hello World” (like all WordPress sites have), then still no one is going to read it but you. “Hello You” would be more accurate.

But it’s been something like 40 years since HELLO WORLD came to be. How about something new?

How about…

Hi There!

I know how to write my first program!

Hello You

Yep, it worked!

My baby is born

Crap, I can’t believe that actually worked!

I’m not as dumb as I thought I was.

Yup

Bingo

I need a beer after that

Bleh!

Howdy Doody

Hey World! (okay, not really)

Howdy World

People actually get paid to do this?

Whazzup! (actually, I take that back – that’s worse)

Anything but HELLO WORLD. That’s so….1970s.

Think it’s time to start a grassroots effort to officially, and finally retire HELLO WORLD.
